Hi.

Welcome to This Awful/Awesome Life! My name is Frances Joyce. I am the publisher and editor of this magazine. We'll be exploring different topics each month to inform, entertain and inspire you. Meet new authors, sharpen your brain and pick up a few tips on life, love, entertaining and business. Enjoy and please share!

July 2022 in This Awful Awesome Life

We hope you enjoyed the June 2022 issue of This Awful Awesome Life. Many thanks to Lilly Kauffman, Orlando Bartro, and Linda Cahill for their contributions to our “Get Outdoors” issue.

This month we are all about the city of Pittsburgh. We have some Pittsburgh history, information on places to see in Pittsburgh and foods to sample.

Our July 2022 Quiz tests your knowledge of famous people born in the Pittsburgh area. How well do you know your Pittsburgh artists, authors, athletes, and entrepreneurs? Take our quiz if you dare. Speaking of dares, our “Dare to Believe” column features two exceptional individuals, Dr. Lillian L. Meyers and Dr. Samuel Hazo.

Our reading recommendations for this month feature Pittsburgh authors and  books about Pittsburgh. July 2022 in Pictures has some great photos of Pittsburgh, and we are streaming movies filmed in Pittsburgh.

This month we have a Q&A with Pittsburgh author Ann K. Howley about her new YA novel, The Memory of Cotton. I also reviewed her book in this issue. I’m pleased to announce Ann and her books are now being featured on our newly updated Author Page.

Lilly Kauffman shares her secret for buying a refrigerator – Keep doing it until you get it right!

Orlando Bartro discusses Theodore Dreiser in Pittsburgh and we’re introducing a new feature, “What’s in a Word?” with a tribute to Pittsburghese.

Our vegetable of the month is broccoli and I have two delicious recipes for you. In hindsight, I should have featured potatoes this month, because we love our potatoes in Pittsburgh. Fear not, we’re featuring potatoes next month; any month is a good month to eat potatoes in the Burgh!

Linda Cahill shares some delicious summer recipes courtesy of Pampered Chef including a potato appetizer and Toasted Almond Cake, a Pittsburgh favorite!

Happy Bithday Title IX! How has this landmark law benefited women and girls and where do we go from here?

If your state has not held it’s primary elections yet, please take this opportunity to vet the candidates before you go to the polls. Know where they stand on all the issues and if their voting records reflect their stance on important issues. Please show up and vote. We will never tell you who to vote for, but we will keep telling you to vote and do your homework! Vote for the candidates who are the most qualified and who will safeguard our democracy.

Samantha Sayers has been missing since she disappeared on August 1, 2018, after a day of solo hiking at Vesper Peak near Seattle, Washington. Sam grew up in the Erie, Pennsylvania area where her parents Ron and Lisa still live. Her family is exploring all avenues of inquiry to find and bring her home. In the face of such an enormous challenge, they have chosen hope. Please keep sending positive thoughts to Sam and her family. As promised, we will be displaying a yellow ribbon for Sam on the opening page of each issue of This Awful Awesome Life until she is home.

If you are a person of faith, please pray for her safe return to her family. Because we are an online publication, we can update this article with any news. We will also post information on our Facebook page. Thank you!
