May 2024 Streaming Mysteries by Fran Joyce

What kind of mysteries do you like? Whether you are still using cable, or you have cut the cord in favor of streaming, there is no shortage of entertaining mysteries to watch this month. Do you enjoy police procedurals, detective fiction, amateur sleuths, suspense/thrillers, true crime, classic mystery, Noir fiction, Whodunits, cozy mysteries, or paranormal mysteries? Since the mystery genre is one of my favorite genres, I often read or watch a variety of the previously listed types of mysteries. Here are ten mysteries you should see. Bodkin (starts May 9) is a mystery thriller with a dark comedic twist on Netflix set in a bucolic coastal town in Ireland. It is a seven episode limited series starring Will Forte , Siobhán Cullen, and David Wilmot. After three strangers go missing, a group of podcasters led by Gilbert (Forte) come to town to investigate and cash in on the situation. When their investigation begins to uncover secrets that implicate the whole town, the line between fantasy and reality begins to blur.

Eric (starts May 30 on Netflix)) Vincent (Benedict Cumberbatch) lives in New York City during the 1970s/early 80s. He’s a puppeteer who takes care of his nine-year-old son, Edgar. When Edgar disappears, Vincent is desperate to find him, and turns to his seven – foot - tall puppet for help. It sounds wacky, but Benedict Cumberbatch seldom disappoints.

Dead Boy Detectives (April 25, 2024, on Netflix) Two teenage ghosts and a clairvoyant team up to solve mysteries for their supernatural clients until they encounter a powerful witch with other plans. Comedy-drama, Occult detective, Supernatural horror. Based on characters created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner.

Ripley (April 4, 2024, on Netflix) A wealthy man hires a grifter named Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) to go to Europe and persuade his son Dickie (Johnny Flynn) to return home. Tom accepts the job, and his grifting evolves into murder after he gets a taste of the finer things in life. Dakota Fanning plays Dickie’s girlfriend, Marge.

Baby Reindeer (April 11, 2024, on Netflix) Donny (Richard Gadd), a struggling comedian and bartender does an act of kindness for one of his customers, Martha (Jessica Gunning) and she becomes obsessed with him. This is a British dark comedy written by Richard Gadd about his real-life events experiences of being stalked and sexually assaulted in his 20s.

Murder in the Heartland (a TV mini-series that first aired on ABC in 1993) It was based on the 1957-58 crime spree through Nebraska and Wyoming carried out by nineteen-year-old Charles Starkweather. It’s available to watch on DIRECTV, Watch OWN, Discovery Life GO, Destination America GO, Max, the Roku Channel, Prime Video, or Apple.

Susie Searches (Streaming on Hulu) – Susie (Kiersey Clemons) is a college student with a failing true-crime podcast. When a popular college student Jesse (Alex Wolff) goes missing, Susie seizes the opportunity to investigate the disappearance on her podcast. She finds fame after rescuing Jesse, but the circumstances of his kidnapping spiral out of control taking Susie with them. Dark comedy with mystery twist.

Under the Bridge (April 17, 2024, on Hulu) is based on the true-crime book Under the Bridge. Godrey (Riley Keough) writes about Reena (Vritika Gupta)Chloe Guidry, a teen who disappears after a beating from a group of teenagers. Godfrey interviews Josepine (Chloe Guidry) the leader of a group of wayward teens. To impress Godrey, Jo claims off the re to have followed Reena after the beating and killed her. Godrey is caught between keeping her word to Jo and cooperating with Cam (Lily Gladstone) a police officer investigating the incident. Tensions mount when Reena’s body is found in the river. What really happened to Reena?

Diarra From Detroit (March 21, 2024, on Amazon Prime) – Diarra (Diarra Kilpatrick) is a schoolteacher in Detroit going through a divorce. She refuses to believe she’s being ghosted by her rebound Tinder date. While searching for the missing man, she is pulled into a decades old mystery involving the Detroit underworld. Also stars Morris Chestnut and Phylicia Rashad. 

History’s Greatest Mysteries (free on the History Channel) – Laurence Fishburne looks at historically important mysteries, popular myths, and modern legends using new evidence. Five seasons of episodes. Also available with a subscription to Disney+ or Philo, Premium subscription to Hulu or Sling TV. Available for a fee on YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, or Amazon Prime Video.
